Cheating in Poker: Sleight of Hand
Poker is supposed to be a game played mainly for fun if it is done at home. Yet still, given this premise, there is still a lot of cheating that happens and such can be rather uncalled for and cause some arguments. A number of cheating instances can occur through a player's perfection of the Mechanic's Grio or the sleight of hand which is done by manipulating the cards found in a deck. One does this by a special way of holding a deck in order to do various cheating maneuvers.
In the Mechanic's Grip, one picks up one deck of cards as if he was going to prepare to deal some of the cards out. Most likely, one would be holding the deck of cards in the palm with four fingers placed at the longer side of the deck, and one's thumb placed on the top part of the deck. When the dealing begins, the player would then use his thumb to push one card on towards the tip of his four fingers as the thumb is holding the card in this place until such time that the thumb and the index finger of his other hand starts to grab it and deal it across the table.
If a player has played cards for a long time, then most likely he would never have noticed how he deals. However, in time, the manner of dealing then becomes a natural motor skill, requiring no conscious form of thinking. So as one holds the deck in such a manner, he then moves his index and middle finger away from the longer side of the deck on to the shorter side of the deck and away from himself. This is known as the Mechanic's Grip. Via this type of grip, cheating activities like peaking, bottom dealing and second dealing are usually done, as more of the deck is concealed by one's hand. One other type of Mechanic's Grip is done by holding the deck of cards with one's thumb right on the top part of the deck.
And then, the index finger would start to hold around at the front edge, while both middle fingers are located beneath the deck and the small finger or little finger is then placed at and round the rear edge. By doing so, a poker cheater can ensure that a lot of the deck of cards is being covered by his hand, him being the dealer.
Cheats like these are used occasionally and found done in some poker games when played at home.
